LUFFA PLANT FIBRE Sheets (1 meter x 25cm)
$4 per Piece
YES, Luffa fiber is a good choice for an extended-release oxalic glycerin mixture for mite control because its fibrous structure effectively absorbs and slowly releases the oxalic acid solution as bees chew on and move the luffa, distributing the treatment throughout the hive. Cellulose-based materials like luffa, sponges, or Swedish dishcloths are suitable for this beekeeper method.
How it works
- Absorption:
The luffa fiber absorbs the oxalic acid and glycerin mixture, holding it within its porous structure.
- Release:
As bees interact with the luffa, they chew on it and drag the material around the hive.
- Transfer:
In the process of breaking down the luffa, the oxalic acid is transferred from the luffa to the bees’ bodies and feet.
- Distribution:
The bees then spread this acid throughout the hive, killing the mites as they come into contact with it.
Preparation and Use
- Prepare the mixture:
Gently heat glycerin and stir in oxalic acid until it dissolves and the liquid is clear.
- Soak the material:
Place the luffa strips in a bag, pour the hot solution over them, and allow ample time for complete absorption.
- Application:
Place the soaked luffa between hive boxes or other suitable locations for long-term mite control.
- Be Patient:
The idea is to provide continuous mite control for months, not just days, with this method.
