WINTERIZING – Our Suggestions
Items to keep your bees warm and dry:
QUILT BOARD:
2 small burlap sacks:
Small Bag of Pine Shavings:
Insulation Pillow:
3/4” Spacer rim:
Hive Wraps
Order of the Winterizing Components:
- Inner Cover above your bees
- Next add a 3/4” Spacer Rim (allows room for fondant, pollen patties, sugar patties, etc. to sit on the inner cover without getting squished)
- Then add the Quilt Box (screen side down)
FILLING YOUR QUILT BOX:
a. OPTION 1: Partially fill 2 small burlap sacks with shavings. * don’t block
ventilation holes. Do NOT use sawdust.
~ use pink insulation board inside your hive cover (from Home Depot)
b. OPTIONS 2: Lay any empty burlap sacks on top of screen and then add
insulation pillow. Don’t block ventilation holes (burlap sacks will need to be
swapped out for dry ones periodically)
4. The Hive Cover goes directly on the top of the Quilt Board
5. Finish with a Hive Wrap (don’t block ventilation holes)
